Positive Athlete Georgia Announces $22,000 in College Scholarships

For the fourth consecutive year, Positive Athlete Georgia, an organization started by former UGA Football star and Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward, will be awarding $22,000 in college scholarships to Georgia high school student-athletes based more on their character than their athletic performance. Nominating an athlete is a very simple process done online at Positive Athlete Georgia’s Website (link), and athletes can be nominated by parents, coaches, teachers, administrators or fans of high school student- athletes grades 9-12. We are looking for athletes who have overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools and communities, or just have an infectious positive attitude.

2016-17 Positive Athlete Georgia Scholarships

Delta Air Lines Scholarships – ($5,000) – Two, $2,500 College Scholarships available to student-athletes state-wide in Georgia who helped make their school or community they live in a better place.

SunTrust Bank “onUp Award” – ($1,000) – Given to an athlete in the state of Georgia who took steps to focus on what matters to their high school and community.

Northside Hospital “Leadership Awards” ($4,000) – Four, $1,000 college scholarships given to student-athletes who have shown exceptional leadership skills at their school and in their community. (Note: Available for the following regions: Cobb County, Northwest Atlanta, North Atlanta, and Atlanta/DeKalb).

LGE Community Credit Union – “Extra Credit Awards” ( $2,000) – Two, $1,000 college scholarships given to the high school student-athlete who goes above and beyond for their team, school and community to make the world a better place. (Note: Available in the following regions: Cobb County and Northwest Atlanta).

WellStar Health System – “Positive Athlete School Wellness Counselors Award” ( $6,000) – Six $1,000 college scholarships given to the WellStar Wellness Counselors who truly symbolize the importance of exercising, healthy life-styles, and being a Positive Athlete. (Note: Available in Cobb County, Northwest Atlanta, North Atlanta, Atlanta DeKalb, South Atlanta and West Georgia).

Cobb EMC “Positive Energy Award” ($1,000) – Given to a Cobb County student-athlete who brought positive energy to every practice and competition.

Gwinnett Medical Center ($2,000) – Comeback Player of the Year Awards” – Two, $1,000 college scholarships given to a Gwinnett County male and female student-athlete who overcame and returned from a game-changing injury or illness that affected their athletic participation, while demonstrating competitive achievement, sportsmanship, ethical behavior and strong academics.

Forsyth County Slugfest Scholarship ($1,000) – Given to a Forsyth County student-athlete who has made a positive difference in the Forsyth County community.

SPECIAL AWARD FOR SUNTRUST BANK “MOST POSITIVE BOOSTER CLUB” ($4,000)

A $4,000 donation will be made to the Georgia High School Booster Club who best supports the Positive Athlete Georgia movement. (Ask your high school Athletic Director for more information).

 

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Scholarships

CBC Spouses Education Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in response to federal cuts in spending for education programs and scholarships. This is the foundation’s first educational program. The CBC Spouses Education scholarship is a national program that awards scholarships to academically talented and highly motivated students who intend to pursue full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees. The Educational Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 and has experienced substantial growth. Recipients for this program are selected through volunteers in the district offices of the members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). CBC Members work through local scholarship committees to award money to academically talented and highly motivated students.

CBCF General Mills Health Scholarship

This scholarship program focusing on health was established in 1998 as the CBC partnered with the naming sponsor, General Mills, to increase the number of minority students pursuing degrees in the fields of medicine, engineering, technology, nutrition and other health-related professions. Since the inception of the program, General Mills has invested more than $1,000,000 to underwrite this initiative. The General Mills Health Scholarship has served hundreds of students over the years, and has helped to create leaders in the medical and health related fields.

CBC Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts Scholarship

Established in the year 2000, the CBC Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts scholarship program was developed in honor of the late Curtis Mayfield to ensure that students pursuing a career in the performing arts receive the financial assistance to achieve their goals.

CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship

The CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship was established in 2006 for students who are pursuing a career in the visual arts.

CBCF Louis Stokes Health Scholars Program

The Louis Stokes Health Scholars program, sponsored by the United Health Foundation, seeks to increase the number of qualified, yet underrepresented, college students entering the health workforce. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest to work in underserved communities. Students currently attending two-year institutions are strongly encouraged to apply.

CBCF Environmental Studies Scholarship

The Environmental Studies Scholarship seeks to provide financial awards to minority and women college students pursuing a degree in environmental science or other related fields of study. Applicants should have a junior class standing in college with a declared major in environmental science or a related field, and understanding and acceptance of ServiceMaster’s core values. This scholarship offers $5,000 per semester to two students.

Louis Stokes CBCF Scholarship at Case Western University

Every year, Case Western Reserve University awards the Louis Stokes CBCF Scholarship at Case Western Reserve University to two outstanding nominees who are nominated by CBC members. Intended to help economically and educationally disadvantaged students attain an education at Case Western Reserve University, the scholarship offers a full-tuition award, renewable for up to five years; a grant of up to $2,500 to cover the purchase of a computer and books; and assistance securing a paid summer internship. This program is open to all first-year students and transfer students from community colleges. In addition to completing an application for admission into Case Western, applicants must complete an additional 250-500 word essay. VIP Women in Technology Scholarship (WITS) Program

The VIP Women in Technology Scholarship (WITS) program is sponsored by Visionary Integration Professionals (VIP), a leading provider of technology solutions that drive enterprise performance. The WITS program is made available annually to women across the United States.

Eligibility: At the time of award, students must be enrolled at, or accepted into, either a two or four-year college or university within the United States for the 2017 school year. These individuals must be planning a career in computer science, information technology, management information systems, computer engineering, or another related field.*

Awards: The 2017 WITS program will grant multiple scholarship awards that value up to $2,500 per recipient.

Evaluation Criteria: The scholarship is based on three important criteria:

A cumulative 3.0 grade point average or higher Thoughtful answer to the essay question Level of participation in community service and/or extracurricular activities

Simon Youth Academy Scholarship Program

  • To be eligible, applicants must:

The John R. Kernodle, Jr. Memorial Scholarship applications are due on February 17, 2017. Renewableaward (up to $10,000 per year) is for future teachers.

The Jason Christopher James Memorial Scholarshipapplications are due onFebruary 8, 2017. Award is for $1000 and is given to a student interested in politics, international relations and traveling, studying and/or living abroad.

The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Scholarship applications are due on May 1, 2017.  $1500 award is renewable for up to four years.  Award is based on need and academic achievement.

The Tyler David Williams Memorial Scholarship applications are due on March 3, 2017.  Renewable award is for $2,500.

The John Carlton Myatt WritingScholarship applications are due on April 15, 2017.  Award is $3,000.  Application information is available through each high school’s English department.

The William Bryant Evans and Lucy Teague Evans Memorial Scholarship applications are due March 3, 2017.  $1,000 award is for residents of the McCleansville area and for students wishing to pursue a degree in science or the humanities.  Renewable award is based on need and academic achievement.

Cobb EMC Community Foundation offers fourteen $5,000 scholarships to eligible high school seniors. Two types of scholarships are available:

The positive energy award is given to Cobb County high school students who bring positive energy to every practice and competition. Parents, coaches, family or teammates can nominate an athlete.

“The Cobb EMC Positive Energy Award is a great example of what Positive Athlete Georgia wants to showcase with our scholarship program,“ said former UGA and Pittsburgh Steelers football star Hines Ward. “Positive energy is so needed in our schools, and Cobb EMC is helping us emphasize that message.”

Simply fill out the form before the March 31 deadline and explain why the nominee is a positive athlete.

 

National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarships

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers:

  • Scholarship support
  • Paid research training at the NIH during the summer
  • Paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation

SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT

The NIH UGSP will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for 1 year, and can be renewed up to 4 years.

RESEARCH TRAINING AT THE NIH

For each full or partial scholarship year, you are committed to two NIH service obligations. The obligations are actually benefits of the UGSP, providing you with invaluable research training and experience at the NIH.

  1. 10-week Summer Laboratory Experience. After each year of scholarship support, you will train for 10 weeks as a paid summer research employee in an NIH research laboratory. This employment occurs after the receipt of the scholarship award. Each scholar will be assigned to an NIH researcher and an NIH postdoctoral fellow, who will serve as mentors. You will also attend formal seminars and participate in a variety of programs.
  2. Employment at the NIH after Graduation. After graduation, you will continue your training as a full-time employee in an NIH research laboratory. You must serve 1 year of full-time employment for each year of scholarship.
