UNCF Member Colleges

Thirty-eight historically black colleges and universities belong to the UNCF network of member institutions. UNCF provides these colleges and universities with a range of support—operating resources, student scholarships and institutional improvement support—that enables them to keep their academic programs strong and their tuitions affordable: more than 30 percent lower on average than tuition at comparable institutions.

Thanks to UNCF support, member institutions educate more than 55,000 students each year and have produced more than 400,000 graduates.

 

National Achievement Scholarship

National Achievement Scholarship Program

The National Achievement® Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Black students may enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit® Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) and meeting other published requirements for participation. The two annual programs are conducted concurrently but operated and funded separately. A student’s standing is determined independently in each program. Black American students can qualify for recognition and be honored as Scholars in both the National Merit Program and the National Achievement Program, but can receive only one monetary award from NMSC.

Student Entry Requirements

To participate in the National Achievement® Scholarship Program, a student must:

  1. take the PSAT/NMSQT® in the specified year of the high school program and no later than the third year in grades 9 through 12, regardless of grade classification or educational pattern;
  2. request entry to the National Achievement Program by marking Section 14 on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet, thereby identifying himself or herself as a Black American who wishes to be considered in this competition as well as in the National Merit® Scholarship Program;
  3. be enrolled as a high school student, progressing normally toward graduation or completion of high school, and planning to enroll full time in college no later than the fall following completion of high school; and
  4. be a citizen of the United States; or be a U.S. lawful permanent resident (or have applied for permanent residence, the application for which has not been denied) and intend to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law.

Information supplied by the student on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet determines whether the individual meets requirements for participation in the National Achievement Program. A school official or the student should report immediately to NMSC any error or change in reported information that may affect participation.

Program Recognition

Of the more than 160,000 students who currently enter the National Achievement® Program each year, over 4,700 are honored. A group of about 3,100 Outstanding Participants are referred to colleges for their potential for academic success. A smaller group of about 1,600 are named Semifinalists, the only students who have an opportunity to advance in the competition for National Achievement Scholarships.

American Association of Blacks in Energy Scholarship

American Association of Blacks in Energy (Atlanta Chapter) Scholarship Application

The purpose of the AABE Atlanta Chapter Scholarship is to assist African American, Hispanic, and Native American students with the cost of pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in an energy related field, at an accredited college/university.

Eligibility

Candidates for an AABE scholarship must meet the following eligibility criteria: Student must be a U. S. Citizen and a resident of Georgia. Student must attend a metro Atlanta area high school. Student must have a B (or better) average or a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale and a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 1400 or American College Testing (ACT) composite score of 19. Student must graduate by June 30, 2012 from an accredited high school institution.

Student should be involved in community/civic service activities. Student must have two recommendations (one from a teacher or counselor and the other non-academic). Student must submit an essay (300 word minimum/350 word maximum) stating why they should receive an AABE scholarship, personal career objectives and any additional information to assist the selection committee. Students must plan to major in approved business, engineering, technology, mathematics or physical science (astronomy, chemistry, geology, mineralogy, meteorology, physics) – i.e., energy industry related fields. Upon notification as an award recipient, student must provide an acceptance letter from an accredited college/university before the awards ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on Thursday, May 10 or Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at Georgia Power’s corporate office in downtown Atlanta.

ESA Youth Scholarship

The Electronic Security Association (ESA) is accepting applications for its 2012 Youth Scholarship Program, which will award $10,000 in scholarships to two children of active duty police officers and firefighters. The first-place winner will receive $7,500 to put toward their college education and the second-place winner will receive $2,500.

100 Black Men of America, Inc., Scholarship

The National Scholarship Program of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. provides scholarships to national applicants.

The award is only open to 100 Black Men mentees, Collegiate 100®, or affiliates who are graduating high school seniors or college undergraduates enrolled full-time in an accredited post-secondary institution. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and deadlines to be considered for the scholarship. The National Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 and is expected to be applied toward tuition, room, board, and books. Checks will be mailed from the World Headquarters Office and made payable to the institution.

Ron Brown Scholars Program

The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Current college students are not eligible to apply.

Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. Ron Brown Scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. More than 250 students have been designated as Ron Brown Scholars since the inception of the Program.

Ron Brown Scholars are selected in the spring prior to entering college. Applications are screened during the month of February by Ron Brown Scholar Program staff. In March, finalists are invited to participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the CAP Charitable Foundation. Finalists are interviewed by members of the Ron Brown Selection Committee and are expected to participate in several Selection Weekend activities. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their applications, interviews and participation in Selection Weekend activities. Notification follows immediately.

Application Deadline

The Ron Brown Scholar Program currently has two deadlines for applications (students must be current high school seniors at the time of their application):

November 1st – application will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program AND forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers.

January 9th – final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for only the Ron Brown Scholar Program ONLY.

Application materials must be mailed in one packet. Transcripts and letters of recommendation should not be sent under separate cover. Incomplete, e-mailed or faxed applications will not be considered.

Below is the timeline for interested applicants to plan the submission of their application to the Ron Brown Scholar Program (RBSP) as well as key dates when eligible applicants will be notified:

  • August – January: Interested applicants can begin to complete and submit the RBSP scholarship application.
  • November 1: Early Applicant Deadline: Interested applicants who complete their applications by November 1st will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program and will be eligible to have their contact information forwarded to a select number of additional colleges and scholarship providers.  Students who apply under this deadline must make the appropriate designation on their application.  Applicants are still responsible for submitting materials to any colleges, universities and scholarship programs for which they are interested.
  • January 9: Final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program ONLY.
  • January – March:  Applications are reviewed by the Program staff.
  • Mid-February: Semi-finalists are notified.
  • Early March: Finalists are notified and invited to participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the Ron Brown Scholar Program. Finalists are interviewed by members of the RBSP National Selection Committee and are expected to participate in several activities during the weekend. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their application materials, interviews and participation in weekend activities.
  • April 1 – Winners in the competition are notified.

Due to the volume of applications received, the Ron Brown Scholar Program can only notify semi-finalists and finalists of their status in the competition.This notification will be made in February and March. Winners of the scholarship will be notified by April 1st and names will be posted on the Ron Brown Scholar Program web site in late April/early May.

Ron Brown Scholarships may be used to supplement benefits from the college or university a student plans to attend and from other foundations or organizations. Scholars may use the scholarship to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, and other college-related expenses.
