ZNEF Scholarships
January 24, 2025Established in 1973 at the behest of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s Executive Board, the National Educational Foundation (NEF) was created by Soror Issie Shelton Jenkins, Esq. to serve as the scholarship arm of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., its primary donor. Under the guidance of Dr. Janice Kissner, International President, and Soror Ione Gibson, Chairman of the Zeta National Executive Board, the NEF’s Trust Agreement was approved and executed on August 23, 1975. Initially operating as a private charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, the NEF transitioned to incorporation on October 19, 2006, and gained IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status on April 23, 2008, concurrently becoming a public charity. This evolution solidified its commitment to providing financial aid to needy students pursuing higher education.
Scholarship amounts vary from $5,000 to $150,000.

Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology Scholarships

The Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology (DFBSST) is an endowment fund which provides scholarships to African-American undergraduate students who enroll in scientific or technical fields of study at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Selection Process
DFBSST identifies students through the assistance of Engineering and Science Department deans and professors at pre-selected, predominantly Black colleges and universities. DFBSST requests the deans and faculty members to identify a specified number of students that they would like to be considered for scholarships, and to pass on DFBSST scholarship application forms to these students.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for scholarships offered by DFBSST, all applicants must meet the following criteria:
- African-American, undergraduate student majoring (or intending to major) in a technical field of study (i.e., engineering, math, science, etc.),
- Be enrolled (or identify his or her intention to enroll) at one of the predominantly Black colleges or universities listed below, and
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Evaluation Criteria
Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Academic achievement (grades and SAT scores, especially science/math),
- Personal essay describing career goals, current and past relevant extracurricular activities, etc.,
- Recommendations (teachers and guidance counselors), and
- Financial need.
Applicants are first ranked based on consideration of items 1, 2 and 3 above. If two (2) applicants are considered to be equal, the candidate with the greatest financial need is ranked higher.
Award Determination
The amount of the scholarships awarded each student is determined by the DFBSST Scholarship Committee. Scholarships are based on merit and financial need. Scholarship awards are up to $3,000 per year. Support is renewed annually, for a maximum of four (4) years, as long as the students remains in good academic standing at the same institution, maintains at least a 3.0 in their major, enrolled in a full-time, undergraduate science or engineering curriculum, and submits a renewal application.
Obtaining a Scholarship Application
Applications can be obtained by contacting the science or engineering department at one of the schools listed below. We do not distribute applications directly to students. All applications must be obtained through and pre-screened by the schools. There can be no exceptions. Scholarship applications are currently available at the following schools:

Scholarship applications become available April 15th and must be submitted by June 15th. Scholarship recipients will be notified in early September.
Aspiring Nurse Scholarship
January 31, 2017Nursing Schools Almanac is proud to announce our third annual Aspiring Nurse Scholarship. We will award a $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates:
- A track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and mathematics
- A passion for the nursing profession and the overall field of healthcare
Competition eligibility
This scholarship competition is open to all U.S. high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship
November 19, 2012Worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea’s aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. As of 2023 the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded more than $7.2 million in college scholarships to 2,422 recipients since its inception in 1996.

Deadline
Scholarship applicants must complete and submit their online application prior to 11:59 (local time) of Day 1 of their respective American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. All applications must be submitted using the online application system and may not be modified after the due date or given a deadline extension under any circumstance.
Participants should check their individual program coordinator as to whether or not the coordinator desires them to bring a hard copy of their submitted application materials. If a hard copy is required, participants will need to complete their application PRIOR to arrival at their respective program.
Award Amounts
Samsung scholarships may be used for undergraduate studies and applied toward tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Winners are selected according to academic record, involvement in school and community service.
- Ten National Scholars receive $10,000 each (two from each region)
- Ten National Runners-Up receive $5,000 each (two from each region)
- Remaining Department Finalists receive $1,250 each guaranteed
Eligibility
Scholarship applications are limited to students between their junior and senior years of high school who attend the current session of either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program and are a direct descendant – i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. Stepchildren and legally adopted children are considered direct descendants of a wartime U.S. military veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for American Legion membership.
Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War Era Veterans will receive three bonus points.

- Form DD214 (Official discharge certificate)
- Official “Honorable Discharge” certificate
- Form DD1300 (Official military death certificate)
- Official record of burial in a military cemetery issued by the National Cemetery Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs
- Current or former military ID card
- Current or former LES (Leave and Earnings Statement)
- Official logbook entries from a military unit
- ANY OTHER DOCUMENT LISTED ON THE “Military Service Verification Documents List” (Linked below)
UNACCEPTABLE
- Any otherwise “acceptable” document that is illegible
- Obituaries
- Pictures of military headstones
- Pictures of service members in uniform
- Entries in non-military and/or non-official records or books
- Membership cards from veterans organizations

The following locations may be of assistance for locating military documents.
- Many certificates of discharge prior to 1979 do not appear to be “official” documents as many were typed onto a sheet of paper. If you are unsure if it is an official document, please ask your American Legion service officer. - The County Clerk and Recorders Office where the veteran resided.
- The funeral home may have kept a copy if military honors were provided.
- Monument company if VA headstone or marker was ordered.

- The State Director of Veterans Affairs may have received a copy of the veterans DD214 at the time of discharge from military service. This will be specific to the state in which the veterans home of record.
