11th Grade of a 7-year Curriculum

Our College Planning Cohort Program is a 7-year curriculum-based program reflecting our 3 pillars of scholarship, leadership, and service designed around the “Essential Questions,” developed by the Coalition of Essential Schools (Coalition of Essential Schools):

  • From whose viewpoint are we seeing or reading or hearing? From what angle or perspective?
  • How do we know when we know? What’s the evidence, and how reliable is it?
  • How are things, events, or people connected to each other? What is the cause and what is the effect? How do they fit together?
  • What’s new and what’s old? Have we run across this idea before?
  • So what? Why does it matter? What does it all mean?

Through the process of deeply considering their current goals and long-term aspirations within a college planning context, students increase their critical thinking skills as they continuously ponder, “What is the right college for me? Where will I receive the most financial aid? How can I further develop my body of work?”

11th graders PLAN to pursue specific college and scholarship pathways:  11th grade is the final opportunity to develop the body of work that students will present to colleges and for scholarships as students begin submitting college and scholarship applications during the summer prior to beginning their senior year of high school. Our junior-year curriculum is design to guide students through a comprehensive process and multiple actions to establish themselves as competitive college applicants.

In the following video, two of our Marietta, Georgia students from our 2018 partnership with Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, share their insight into the contrasts between the guidance and support provided through our program with what was offered at their respective high schools. Sam was selected as a UMBC Meyerhoff Scholar and received a full scholarship to attend the University of Maryland – Baltimore County (an honors university within the University of Maryland system) where he received a BS in Math, BS in Statistics, and BA in Economics. He was also selected as a Rhodes Scholar and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics at Oxford University in England. Loren was offered admission, together with a full scholarship to attend Williams College where received a BA in Religious Studies and is now in Seminary School.

Through our 11th grade curriculum, Sam and Loren were exposed to many extraordinary opportunities and colleges that were unknown to most students and teachers in their respective high schools, both of which were ranked as top high schools in the state of Georgia.

In the following video, Kristen, a participant in our 2018 Guilford County Schools Cohort, describes the comprehensive nature of how our 11th grade curriculum guided the development of her body of work, which was ultimately packaged for each of the colleges to which she applied. Kristen received a full scholarship to the University of Richmond as a Richmond Scholar, where she received her BS in Biology and is now attending graduate school at Duke.
